An Experienced Guruswami Speaks

Your first yatra should begin with humility, not hurry

A gentle companion for the Kanni Swami - understanding the sacred call and your first blessed climb.

For a first-time pilgrim, Sabarimala is not merely a destination. It is a vow, a discipline, and an inward purification. If I may guide you as an elder devotee, let me say this first: do not treat the yatra like tourism, and do not allow excitement to weaken obedience to custom, safety, or temple order.

Go with a steady mind, listen to your Guruswami, follow the field instructions of police and temple staff, and keep the holy name on your lips.

Five instructions I give every first-time pilgrim

Illustration for five instructions for first-time pilgrims

1. Begin under guidance

If possible, travel with an experienced Guruswami or a disciplined senior in your group. First-time confusion disappears when you walk behind someone who knows the route, the customs, the rhythm of prayer, and the order of the pilgrimage.

2. Observe the 41-day Vratham sincerely

Celibacy, vegetarian discipline, simple clothing, daily prayer, controlled speech, and humility are not optional ornaments. They are the true beginning of the yatra.

3. Keep your dress and behaviour simple

Wear the traditional pilgrim colours used by your group. Avoid display, luxury, argument, and loud behaviour. Your mind should become lighter as the journey approaches.

4. Reach the hill with order already in place

Virtual Q, ID proof, medicines, route planning, rest, and group coordination must be settled before you enter the intense crowd zones.

5. Darshan comes to the patient pilgrim

Do not push. Do not jump queues. Do not treat police guidance as obstruction. The one who walks with patience receives darshan with inner peace.

Pilgrim Safety Advisory

Large pilgrimage gatherings can become extremely crowded, and most preventable problems occur when people rush, separate from their group, or rely on unofficial guidance. Staying calm, alert, and prepared will help ensure a safe and peaceful pilgrimage experience for everyone.

Stay With Your Group

Always remain with your travel group or family members, especially in crowded sectors, queues, or moving pathways. Decide on a simple meeting point in advance in case anyone gets separated. Keep children, elderly pilgrims, and those who may need assistance close to you at all times.

Be Cautious With Directions and Shortcuts

Follow only the routes and instructions provided by official authorities, volunteers, or clearly marked signage. Avoid unverified shortcuts suggested by strangers, as these may lead to unsafe or restricted areas or cause you to lose your way.

Protect Your Belongings

Keep personal items such as bags, mobile phones, wallets, and important documents secure and within sight. Do not hand over belongings to unknown individuals offering to "hold," "carry," or "assist" unless they are clearly identified as official staff or volunteers.

Recognize Signs of Fatigue or Distress

Crowded environments and long walking distances can cause exhaustion. If you feel breathless, dizzy, weak, confused, or overwhelmed, stop moving immediately and step aside to a safe area. Sit down if needed and seek assistance from the nearest official help point, medical post, or volunteer.

If You Get Separated

If you become separated from your group, remain calm. Move toward a designated help center, information booth, or security personnel and inform them of your situation. Avoid wandering through dense crowds trying to find your group on your own.

Follow Crowd Safety Practices

Walk steadily and avoid pushing or rushing in queues.

Keep a safe distance from barricades and moving crowd waves.

Stay hydrated and take rest breaks when needed.

Follow announcements and instructions from authorities at all times.

By staying patient, alert, and cooperative with safety guidelines, pilgrims can help create a secure and respectful environment for everyone participating in the pilgrimage.

For families with children

Choose the easier route, pack lightly, carry child identification details in writing, and plan food, rest, and warm clothing beforehand. Young children should not be dragged through peak-rush conditions without preparation.

For elderly pilgrims

Do not hide health conditions out of emotion. Carry the prescribed medicines, inform your group leader, and make use of seating, oxygen, or medical support when needed. Wisdom is not stubbornness.

For interstate and overseas devotees

Keep your ID copies, booking records, accommodation details, and transport plan ready. Do not depend on network coverage alone in hill areas, and do not leave final decisions to the last minute.

What you should expect on your first climb

At Pamba

Settle yourself, gather your group, and begin with remembrance. Avoid noise and confusion before the trek begins.

On the hill path

Walk at a natural pace. There is no merit in rushing and no shame in resting. Watch your footing, especially in wet conditions and night movement.

Near Sannidhanam

As you approach the inner zones, your speech should reduce and your attention should increase. Keep mobile phone use to a minimum and obey the current queue protocol without resistance.

First-timer's inner discipline

Chant steadily

The name of Ayyappa should anchor the mind when fatigue, irritation, or crowd pressure rises.

See all pilgrims as equal

On this path, status has no place. Walk with brotherhood, service, and mutual care.

Return home with the same simplicity

The yatra is not complete when the darshan ends. Preserve some of the restraint, remembrance, and compassion you cultivated on the journey.

First-timer's FAQ for 2025-26

Who can visit the temple?

The temple is remembered for welcoming devotees across communities. The current page guidance follows the long-standing custom that males of all ages and females below 10 or above 50 may undertake the pilgrimage, while field rules and legal directions in force at the time of travel remain final.

Is Virtual Q mandatory?

Yes. Treat Virtual Q as the main crowd-management route for the 2025-26 season, and keep your permit ready well before the peak period from late December to mid-January.

Can I come without the full 41-day Vrutham?

The full Vrutham remains the spiritual core of the yatra. Devotees who could not complete the full term may still visit, but the Irumudi and Mala discipline remain central if they intend to climb the 18 holy steps.

Which route is easiest for a beginner?

The Nilakkal to Pamba approach followed by the 4 to 5 km hill climb is the easier route for beginners. The long forest route from Erumeli should be attempted only with an experienced group.

Where will I stay and eat?

Pilgrim shelters and viris are available at Pamba and Sannidhanam, and Annadanam support is widely available through official and trust-run service points.

What if a medical emergency happens?

Stop immediately and use the marked cardiac, oxygen, or emergency medical centres along the trek. Do not try to push through chest pain, dizziness, or severe breathlessness.

Can I use my phone for photos?

No. Photography and video inside the Sannidhanam and around the 18 steps are prohibited. Keep the device only for coordination, permits, and emergency use.

Best first-timer sequence

Before travel, read this page together with the Vratham guide, the Irumudi page, the booking page, and the holy steps page. That sequence removes most beginner confusion before the crowd becomes intense.

Important word on customs and current rules

Some practical and legal matters around Sabarimala can change over time. Therefore, treat the official notices in force at the time of travel as final. Follow the current directions of the Travancore Devaswom Board, the Kerala government Sabarimala portal, and field officers at Nilakkal, Pamba, and Sannidhanam.

For 2025-26, this page records the continuing customary entry guidance that women in the age band of 10 to 50 years are traditionally restricted while legal proceedings remain under review. Devotees should always verify the final operational instructions in force when the journey begins.

If this is your first yatra, settle your Virtual Q and travel verification first, then read the Pathinettampadi rules before you approach the shrine.
