An Experienced Guruswami Speaks

Your first yatra should begin with humility, not hurry

For a first-time pilgrim, Sabarimala is not merely a destination. It is a vow, a discipline, and an inward purification. If I may guide you as an elder devotee, let me say this first: do not treat the yatra like tourism, and do not allow excitement to weaken obedience to custom, safety, or temple order.

Go with a steady mind, listen to your Guruswami, follow the field instructions of police and temple staff, and keep the holy name on your lips.

Five instructions I give every first-time pilgrim

1. Begin under guidance

If possible, travel with an experienced Guruswami or a disciplined senior in your group. First-time confusion disappears when you walk behind someone who knows the route, the customs, the rhythm of prayer, and the order of the pilgrimage.

2. Observe the 41-day Vratham sincerely

Celibacy, vegetarian discipline, simple clothing, daily prayer, controlled speech, and humility are not optional ornaments. They are the true beginning of the yatra.

3. Keep your dress and behaviour simple

Wear the traditional pilgrim colours used by your group. Avoid display, luxury, argument, and loud behaviour. Your mind should become lighter as the journey approaches.

4. Reach the hill with order already in place

Virtual Q, ID proof, medicines, route planning, rest, and group coordination must be settled before you enter the intense crowd zones.

5. Darshan comes to the patient pilgrim

Do not push. Do not jump queues. Do not treat police guidance as obstruction. The one who walks with patience receives darshan with inner peace.

As a senior police officer would warn you

In crowded pilgrimage sectors, most avoidable trouble begins with impatience. Stay with your group, keep children and elders close, avoid unverified shortcuts, and never hand over bags, phones, or money to unknown persons.

If you feel breathless, weak, confused, or separated from your group, stop immediately and approach the nearest official help point.

For families with children

Choose the easier route, pack lightly, carry child identification details in writing, and plan food, rest, and warm clothing beforehand. Young children should not be dragged through peak-rush conditions without preparation.

For elderly pilgrims

Do not hide health conditions out of emotion. Carry the prescribed medicines, inform your group leader, and make use of seating, oxygen, or medical support when needed. Wisdom is not stubbornness.

For interstate and overseas devotees

Keep your ID copies, booking records, accommodation details, and transport plan ready. Do not depend on network coverage alone in hill areas, and do not leave final decisions to the last minute.

What you should expect on your first climb

At Pamba

Settle yourself, gather your group, and begin with remembrance. Avoid noise and confusion before the trek begins.

On the hill path

Walk at a natural pace. There is no merit in rushing and no shame in resting. Watch your footing, especially in wet conditions and night movement.

Near Sannidhanam

As you approach the inner zones, your speech should reduce and your attention should increase. Keep mobile phone use to a minimum and obey the current queue protocol without resistance.

First-timer's inner discipline

Chant steadily

The name of Ayyappa should anchor the mind when fatigue, irritation, or crowd pressure rises.

See all pilgrims as equal

On this path, status has no place. Walk with brotherhood, service, and mutual care.

Return home with the same simplicity

The yatra is not complete when the darshan ends. Preserve some of the restraint, remembrance, and compassion you cultivated on the journey.

Important word on customs and current rules

Some practical and legal matters around Sabarimala can change over time. Therefore, treat the official notices in force at the time of travel as final. Follow the current directions of the Travancore Devaswom Board, the Kerala government Sabarimala portal, and field officers at Nilakkal, Pamba, and Sannidhanam.
