Vishu Kani, Kaineetam, and Padi Pooja at Sabarimala

Vishu is a short but deeply loved opening at Sabarimala. Devotees come for the first auspicious sight of the New Year, the gift of Vishu Kaineetam, and the rare evening Padi Pooja on the 18 sacred steps.

Vishu Kani: the first sight of the year

The arrangement

On the eve of Vishu, the temple priests arrange the Kani in front of Lord Ayyappa with kanikkonna flowers, gold, coins, cloth, fruits, and the valkannadi mirror. The whole arrangement symbolizes prosperity, right vision, and divine grace for the coming year.

The darshan

The sanctum opens at about 4:00 AM on Vishu morning. Devotees believe that seeing the Lord surrounded by these auspicious symbols as the first sight of the New Year brings blessing and abundance through the year.

Vishu Kaineetam and special poojas

Vishu Kaineetam

After the Kani Darshan, the Melsanthi and Tantri distribute Vishu Kaineetam, the blessed coin offering. Because the rush is intense, this distribution is usually handled from the sreekovil side or a designated nearby point.

Udayasthamana and Padi Pooja

Vishu days can include Udayasthamana Pooja from sunrise to sunset, and the evening Padi Pooja after Deeparadhana. This makes the Vishu opening one of the most spiritually rich short seasons of the year.

What devotees should plan for

Queue discipline

Because the Vishu season is short, Virtual Queue slots fill up very fast. For Vishu Day itself, the rush can feel close to a Mandala-style flow, so booking early is essential.

Arrive the previous night

If devotees want to join the 4:00 AM Kani Darshan queue, they should aim to reach the Sannidhanam by the night of April 14 itself rather than trying to climb at the last minute.

April heat

April is peak summer in Kerala. The climb from Pamba can be hot and dehydrating, so carry water, pace the ascent, and protect elderly devotees from heat stress.

Why Vishu feels special

Short season, deep emotion

Unlike the huge Mandala rush, Vishu gives a more concentrated devotional atmosphere. The New Year sight, the Kaineetam blessing, and the evening pooja cycle make the hill feel festive in a different way.

Padi Pooja rarity

The evening Padi Pooja during Vishu is one of the most sought-after ritual experiences. Devotees who love the Pathinettampadi usually treat this as one of the most graceful evenings of the season.

Mandatory booking

Even during Vishu, darshan access remains tied to official booking systems and crowd orders. Pilgrims should carry queue proof, ID, and an offline backup of the booking confirmation.
