Sacred Arrow

Saramkuthi: the final milestone where the first-time pilgrim surrenders the arrow

Saramkuthi is one of the most emotionally charged points of the entire climb. It is the place where the silence of the forest opens into the temple approach, and where the Kanni Ayyappan offers the wooden arrow before moving toward the 18 Holy Steps.

Historical and mythological significance

The victory of the prince

Tradition remembers Saramkuthi as the place where Lord Manikandan left his arrows after the battle against Mahishi, marking the laying down of weapons before the final sanctified approach.

Meaning of the name

Saram means arrow and Kuthi means struck or pierced. The place name itself preserves the memory of the sacred arrow offering.

The old banyan memory

Older devotees remember the great banyan tree where thousands of wooden arrows were once fixed. Today a protected area and symbolic platform continue that memory.

The ritual of the Kanni Ayyappan

Carrying the Sarakkol

Every first-time pilgrim carries a wooden arrow during the trek as a visible sign of the Kanni Ayyappan vow.

Leaving the arrow here

At Saramkuthi, the arrow is placed in the designated area or symbolically offered under the guidance of the Guruswamy before proceeding onward.

The promise to Malikappurathamma

This act is linked to the legend that the Lord would marry Malikappurathamma only in a year when no Kanni Ayyappan visits. Each arrow offering signals that the wait continues for another year.

Location, atmosphere, and pilgrim flow

About 1 km before the temple

Saramkuthi stands on the final stretch before the Sannidhanam and the 18 Holy Steps.

Forest path becomes temple walkway

This is where the narrow, older path opens into the broader Nadappanthal zone and the energy of the temple complex becomes more immediate.

Procession route

The Thiruvabharanam and the Pallivetta procession both pass through Saramkuthi, adding even more ritual weight to the place.
